Rapids have tough games to come, but so do all the others in playoff contention
Some fans are still not convinced that this Rapids side has it within them to push for the playoffs, pointing to the fact that they’ve played more games than any of their rivals.
Here’s how things look as of July 29, 2013:
Real Salt – three points ahead, with a game in hand (v. Portland, away)
Portland – level on points, with two games in hand (v. RSL, home; LA Galaxy, home)
LA – one point behind, with two games in hand after next weekend (v Vancouver, away; Portland, away)
Vancouver – two points behind, with two games in hand (v LA, home; RSL, home)
Dallas – two points behind, with two games in hand (v Chivas, away; San Jose, home)
Seattle – six points behind, with four games in hand (v Portland, home; Chivas, home; NYRB, home; Portland, away)
The Rapids have some tough games to come, but so too do all the others in playoff contention.
RSL must still go to LA, Portland (twice, and meet them at home), Seattle and Vancouver.
Portland face RSL three times, Seattle twice (home and away), Vancouver twice (home and away) and LA.
* RSL and Portland also meet in the semi-finals of the US Open Cup (August 7).
The Galaxy tackle Dallas, RSL and Vancouver in successive games. They must also meet Seattle home and away and travel to Portland.
Vancouver – who have only lost once at home this season – must visit Dick’s Sporting Goods Park twice. They have also yet to play Portland home and away, entertain RSL, go to Canadian rivals Montreal, or travel to Seattle.
As for FC Dallas, well their next three games are Seattle (a), LA (h) and Portland (a). They also face road trips to the Rapids, the Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake.
And then there’s Seattle, who have four games in hand over the Rapids. They, though, have home and away games at Dallas, Portland and LA, as well as a trip to Houston and a return to DSGP.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again … I would rather have the points in the bag at this stage of the season, than a back-log of additional games.
Still all to play for.
