Rapids U-16s capture win to finish second in group

Team captured a 2-1 win against the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves, to play for 3rd among 80 teams

The Colorado Rapids Under-16 Team captured a 2-1 win against the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves on Thursday night at the Development Academy Finals Week in Houston. Though the Rapids went undefeated in group play with a win and two draws, they finished second in the group and will play in Saturday’s third-place match against Albertson SC of New York.

The Rapids entered the match knowing they needed a two-goal win combined with a draw in the other match in their group, between De Anza Force and Solar Chelsea SC. As a result, Colorado attacked from the start, and broke through in the 26th minute of the 80 minute match, when Jovanni Chavez finished a corner from Edward Venta-Yepes.

Soon after the second half began, Colorado got the second goal it was looking for, with Venta-Yepes again getting the assist, this time to Victor Rolph. However, the Wolves pulled a goal back on a penalty kick in the 61st minute, and while the Rapids tried to restore the two goal lead, they couldn’t find the net. The 2-1 win did solidify second place for Colorado.

In the other match in Colorado’s group, Solar Chelsea SC of Dallas earned a big 3-0 win over De Anza Force, giving Solar a spot in the Development Academy U-16 championship match. With five points, two behind Solar, the Rapids will face the second place team from the other Finals Week group, Albertson SC, for third place out of the 80 Development Academy teams across the country.

The Rapids U-16’s are already guaranteed to have the best-ever finish by a Rapids team in the Development Academy, topping the Rapids U-18’s final placement of 6th a year ago. The massive achievement for the U-16’s is due to the hard work of the Rapids Academy players, coaches, staff and families.

The third-place match will take place this Saturday, July 20, with coverage on www.ColoradoRapids.com and www.twitter.com/ColoradoRapids.
