Power Rankings Week 24: Two outlets rank Colorado third overall
Each week we will take a look at where the Colorado Rapids stand in the weekly Power Rankings on national soccer media websites.
Week 24 saw the Rapids "rescue" a 1-1 draw at Chivas thanks to an 80' goal from Martin Rivero. The result moves Colorado into a tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps for second place in the crowded Western Conference. To add to the drama, the Rapids will face Vancouver on Saturday, Aug. 17 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (TICKETS). Currently the Rapids are tied for 5th in the overall in MLS standings.
Here’s how the week affected the team's standings in national MLS Power Rankings:
You know that old saying, "They couldn't hit the broad side of a barn"? The Rapids took 26 shots against Chivas and only seven were on goal. They're still rolling, but that's simply not sustainable. Gabriel Torres can't suit up soon enough.
(Gabriel Torres will be eligible to suit up on Saturday)
Against a nine-man Chivas side, the Rapids could only muster a draw in a match where they played with 10 men for 41 minutes.
Colorado probably should have played better against lowly Chivas, but a road point is not to be thrown away. I'm still baffled that some aren't convinced the Rapids are the real deal.
Martín Rivero’s wonderful header was the late equalizer against nine-man Chivas USA, the late, late capper Sunday night to MLS Round 24. Oscar Pareja’s team is unbeaten in its last eight.
The sight of oft-injured midfielder Martin Rivero finding the net was most welcome for Colorado. But the 1-1 tie while playing a man up for long stretches against Chivas saw the Rapids leave two precious points on the table.
