Academy 18s Recap: Rapids and Sporting KC combine for 14 goals in two games
The Rapids Academy U18s and Sporting KC's U18s put on quite an offensive display in the two matches against each other over the weekend at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The teams combined for 14 goals, including three in stoppage of the 3-3 draw on Saturday, and SKC's 5-3 win over the Rapids on Sunday morning.
On Saturday the Rapids started off slow, struggling to keep possession. Sporting KC capitalized in the 30th on a goal by Cole Stevenson.
However the Rapids were able to tie the game just before the half when Bryce Montes finished from inside the six yard box after a good build up.
SKC went back up quickly in the second half, as Stevenson again putting the visitors ahead.
Despite SKC dominating portions of the second, the Rapids hung around and Jake Smits tied the game in the 89' with a long-range strike. Minutes later, second-half substitute Jacob Hanlin broke free after another nice combination and slotted home what was thought to be the game-winner deep into stoppage time. But Sporting earned one last corner kick and Darby Cronin smashed home a lose ball on the final kick of the game.

After combining for six goals on Saturday, the teams scored eight on Sunday morning, with Sporting KC edging Colorado 5-3.
The Rapids started well and the sustained pressure paid off when Isaac Martinez finished a pass from Jacob Hanlin to put Colorado up after only 10 minute. Sporing KC came right back and tied the game minutes later when their forward showed great individual work at the top of the box, spinning off defender Kurt Young to finish at the far post.
Colorado came right back with Jovanni Chaves scored from 15 yards out after KC failed to clear a corner kick.
The lead was short-lived as an SKC played put away a second chance ball off their own corner kick and then took the lead minutes later.
Chavez then set up Hanlin with some great work down the left side to tie the match again.
However restarts again hurt Colorado as KC re-took the lead when they nodded home free kick and iced the match in the final minutes by finishing a 3v2 counter attack as the Rapids pressed for the equalizer.
