Academy on Campus: Bolden, Chavez, Perez and Rogers score for respective schools on opening day

A weekly update on Colorado Rapids Academy alumni playing in Division I schools across the country as of September 3, 2013:

The college soccer season opened this past weekend across the country, and a total of 22 Rapids Academy products were on rosters around the NCAA Division I ranks. Several teams have yet to open their seasons, but among those that played, several scored goals, including Zach Bolden at DU, Josue Chavez at Lipscomb, Ricardo Perez at Creighton, and James Rogers at New Mexico. Read on for individual reports on the Rapids Academy players and their college teams.

Avery Ball – Wright State (0-0-0) – Freshman midfielder from Fort Collins and his teammates will open their season next weekend after their first match was postponed due to weather.

Zach Bolden – University of Denver (1-1-0) – Senior midfielder from Denver started both of DU’s first two games, and had a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win over UC Bakersfield, which followed a 2-0 season-opening loss to #21 Charlotte.

Alex Braman – St. Mary’s (CA) College (2-0-0) – Freshman defender from Niwot started both of the Gaels’ first two matches of the season, and assisted on the team’s first goal of 2013 in the 3-1 win over Air Force.

Ben Braman – St. Mary’s (CA) College (2-0-0) – Freshman defender from Niwot started both of the Gaels’ first two matches of the season, and got his first collegiate assist in the second match, a 2-0 win over LIU Brooklyn.

Josue Chavez – Lipscomb University (1-0-0) – Sophomore midfielder from Longmont scored the game’s first goal in a 3-1 win over Belmont in the season opener.

Andrew Epstein – Stanford University (0-1-1) – Freshman goalkeeper from Fort Collins has not made an appearance for the Cardinal, and is behind a senior and returning starting goalkeeper on the depth chart.

Michael Gottlinger – Iona College (0-1-1) – Freshman defender from Fort Collins has yet to make an appearance for the Gaels.

Chris Gurule – University of New Mexico (1-0-0, #9) – Redshirt freshman defender from Longmont made a substitute appearance in his collegiate debut, helping the 9th-ranked Lobos earn a big 7-2 win over Villanova.

Karsten Hanlin – University of Denver (1-1-0) – Sophomore midfielder from Centennial started in both of DU’s first two games of the season, helping the team to a 4-0 win over UC Bakersfield after a 2-0 loss to #21 Charlotte.

Brad Holub – UNLV (0-2-0) – Freshman goalkeeper from Golden has not made an appearance for the Cardinal, and is behind a senior and returning starting goalkeeper on the depth chart.

Eric Kronenberg – University of Denver (1-1-0) – Freshman forward from Boulder did not appear in DU’s first two matches of the season.

Joseph Kuzminsky – Alabama-Birmingham (2-0-0, #18) – Redshirt freshman goalkeeper from Denver made a substitute appearance in a 5-1 win over High Point, his first collegiate action, allowing no goals and making no saves in just under 15 minutes for the 18th-ranked Blazers. A senior goalkeeper played the rest of the team’s minutes over the opening weekend.

Ricardo Perez – (pictured above) Creighton University (2-0-0, #2) – Freshman forward from Fort Collins appeared as a substitute in each of the Blue Jays’ first two matches, and scored the game-winner in the first match of the season. Creighton moved from 6th up to 2nd in the national ranking released this week.

Jason Pillard – Wake Forest University (1-0-0, #21) – Freshman defender from Niwot did not appear in the Demon Deacons’ season opening win.

James Rogers – University of New Mexico (1-0-0, #9) – Junior forward from Fort Collins picked up where he left off after a strong 2012 season, scoring a pair of goals in a 7-2 win over Villanova in the season opener. He tied for the team-high with five shots in the match for the #9 ranked Lobos.

Austin Seifert – Wright State (0-0-0) – Freshman forward from Colorado Springs and his teammates will open their season next weekend after their first match was postponed due to weather.

Patrick Slogic – Cornell University (0-0-0) – Senior defender from Colorado Springs will open the season with the Big Red this weekend with a pair of games. A standout from last year’s strong team, Slogic was one of 30 men’s soccer players from around the country nominated as a candidate for the prestigious CLASS award, which honors those that demonstrate exemplary characteristics in what a national media committee considers the "four Cs": community, classroom, character and competition.

Drake Stewart – Wright State (0-0-0) – Senior forward from Colorado Springs and his teammates will open their season next weekend after their first match was postponed due to weather.

Matthew Taphorn – Central Arkansas (1-1-0) – Junior defender from Denver started both matches for the Bears as their season opened with a win and a loss, both at home.

Cameron Taylor – Cornell University (0-0-0) – Freshman midfielder from Littleton will open the season with the Big Red this weekend with a pair of games.

Alex Toderica – University of Denver (1-1-0) – Freshman forward from Longmont did not appear in DU’s first two matches of the season.

Bryan Windsor – Princeton University (0-0-0) – Freshman midfielder from Boulder will open the season with the Tigers this weekend with a pair of road matches.
