Bleacher Report: Rapids forward Deshorn Brown "Top 5 Players from Around the World This Weekend"
It's pretty much a given that if a player scores more than one goal on the weekend in MLS play, he'll likely win the MLS Player of the Week honor come Monday, as voted by the North American Soccer Reporters. Sometimes, even a goalkeeper or in rare occasions another field player will get the nod.
So obviously, when a rookie forward scores twice against the League's top team and help his side rout the visitors 5-1, one wouldn't be wrong in expecting that player would win the honor. Or, maybe another rookie scoring once and adding an assist in the same game, in addition to being part of a midfield that ran over the other side.
Well that was not the case, at least not this week.
If you're on this site you are well aware of what Rapids rookie Deshorn Brown did to Seattle, scoring in the first minute and then bringing Seattle's DeAndre Yedlin for a ride as he scored his second goal of the game. And what Dillon Powers did, instinctively reacting to a quickly taken corner kick to head in the second goal of the game, before setting up Brown's second goal.
The impact these two players had - putting Colorado up 3-0 by the 31st minute on Seattle - would normally be enough for national media to notice (and some did).
However, the members of NASR that voted for the weekly award felt that Vancouver's Camilo was more deserving of the honor - for the third time this year. After all, Camilo helped his side, who trail Colorado by four points, earn a 2-2 tie versus Portland. (Yes, Camilo had an amazing goal - actually a top contender for MLS Goal of the Year.)
Perhaps I should note that Colorado and Dallas are the only two teams without a Player of the Week honor this year (yes, DC, Toronto, and Chivas USA have all had a player be the best in a week this year). In fairness, the Rapids have played fantastic team soccer, so it's not often that one player stood out above the group.
Fortunately, there were others that did recognize Brown and his teammates for the outstanding game last week.
MLSsoccer.com has Brown among the week's Top 3 Performers.
Brown, Powers, and Drew Moor were among the top 8 players according to Castrol Index.
Brown, Moor, and Vicente Sanchez are on MLSsoccer.com's Team of the Week.
And, Clint Irwin's point-blank save is up for MLS Save of the Week.
But the biggest recognition comes from SI.com Bleacher Report's feature columnist Alex Richards, who says Brown was among his "Top 5 Players from Around the World" over the weekend, along with Manchester United's Adnan Januzaj, West Ham United's Winston Reid, Hamburg's Pierre-Michel Lasogga, and Remy Cabella from Montpellier.
Richard writes that Brown "was a menace" who "bullied the Sounders" while giving his Rapids team constant options from the left flank. Check out his article to see what he says about Brown and the others.
