Colorado Rapids could clinch a berth in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs Wednesday
In one of the tightest playoff races in MLS history, only the New York Red Bulls have secured a spot in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs with only three weeks to play.
The Colorado Rapids could be next, and it could happen as early as Wednesday.
The Rapids would clinch a berth in the playoffs with a win in San Jose over the Earthquakes - AND - if the Vancouver Whitecaps either tie or lose to the Seattle Sounders earlier the same night.
The top five teams in each conference make the playoffs.
Here's why the Rapids could clinch a berth on Wednesday:
A win by Colorado would push the Rapids to 51 points on the season with two matches to go, guaranteeing a top five finish:
- A loss by San Jose would keep the Earthquakes at 44 points. With two games remaining, the most points San Jose could finish with is 50.
- Vancouver enters the week with 42 points with three games remaining. If they tie Seattle, the most points the Whitecaps could finish with is 49.
- Dallas, at 41 points, can at most reach 50 points on the season if they win their final three games.
- Chivas USA has already been mathematically eliminated from contention.
The Rapids-Earthquakes match will be televised live on Altitude TV at 8:30 p.m. MT. The Sounders-Whitecaps game can be seen on MLS Live of the MLS Direct Kick package at 8 p.m. MT.
