COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, October 10, 2013) – This weekend, the Colorado Rapids will host the Central Region’s first event of the Generation adidas Cup, an annual showcase tournament presented by Major League Soccer and sponsored by adidas, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Colorado Rapids U-17 team will face Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas, and Houston in the first round of the tournament.

The Generation adidas Cup is comprised of U-17 academy teams from 17 MLS franchises, divided into three regions, and serves as a showcase event for the country’s most talented youth players. Each region competes in two qualifying events, and the top three teams at the end of the first two rounds advance to the international event, held in April, where teams from around the world are invited to play against the top American clubs. Those that don’t qualify for the international event will advance to the domestic event and compete against clubs from the other regions.

Of Colorado’s three matches, their games against Real Salt Lake and Houston will count towards the tournament standings, while the game against FC Dallas is marked as a friendly and does not affect either team’s advancement. All matches, which will take place on Dick’s Sporting Goods Park fields 19-24, are free and open to the public. The two other teams that are competing in Colorado this weekend as part of the Central Region are the Chicago Fire and Sporting KC.

In addition to the Generation adidas Cup, the Colorado Rapids are also hosting three other U-15 academy teams, Chicago Fire, FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake, for an exhibition event at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this weekend.
