Power Rankings Week 31: Did the bye week affect the Rapids?
Each week we will take a look at where the Colorado Rapids stand in the weekly Power Rankings on national soccer media websites.
The Western Conference playoff picture got even more crowded in week 31 and there was nothing that the Colorado Rapids could do about it. The Rapids sat idle while the Sounders and Real Salt Lake pulled even at the top of the conference and the San Jose Earthquakes pulled within a point of the 5th spot. Now that the smoke has cleared, the team sits in a tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy for 4th place in the Western Conference standings.
Here’s how the week affected the team's standings in national MLS Power Rankings:
The bye week came at a weird time, though perhaps Oscar Pareja was a bit grateful to have the extra sessions at hand, since it's a chance to continue integrating the new faces.
Teams ranked above the Rapids: NY Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders, Real Salt Lake, Portland Timbers, Sporting KC.
Colorado had the week off to rest up for a crucial stretch of October matches.
Heading into the final month of the season, the Rapids sit in fifth place in the West, just one point ahead of San Jose.
Teams ranked above the Rapids: LA Galaxy, Sporting KC, NY Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Montreal Impact.
The healing Rapids rested up for a demanding four-game push that will finish the season, including an Oct. 9 date at San Jose, which trails them by three points for fifth place and the final playoff spot. A home win Saturday would expand the lead to six points, but it’s the Sounders who are coming to town.
Teams ranked above the Rapids: Seattle Sounders, NY Red Bulls.
The West’s final playoff spot is there for Oscar Pareja’s team to take, but there is plenty of work ahead in holding off San Jose. That playoff berth may well come down an Oct. 9 contest between the clubs at Buck Shaw Stadium in San Jose.
Teams ranked above the Rapids: NY Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, LA Galaxy, Sporting KC.
Fortunes were mixed for the idle Rapids. Vancouver and Dallas both lost at home, but a revived San Jose side is now putting on the pressure. Games against Seattle and the Quakes in a four day span will decide Colorado's playoff fate.
Teams ranked above the Rapids: Portland Timbers, Sporting KC, NY Red Bulls, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders.
What do you think of the rankings this week? Any predictions for the Seattle match?
