Pine Creek wins school's first 5A boys soccer state title at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday
Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) held their 5A, 4A and 3A boys soccer state championship games at Dick's Sporting Goods Park for the fifth consecutive year this Saturday. The night proved to be as exciting as years past, with a first ever title winner, a repeat champion, and a late game stunner all part of the action.
First up on Saturday was the 4A state final between Air Academy and Cheyenne Mountain. The Pikes Peak League rivals met for the second time this season in the game for all the marbles, after Air Academy defeated Cheyenne Mountain 4-3 in October. The teams played evenly throughout the first half until the 38th minute of 40 minutes halves, when John Herd found the back of the net with a left-footed strike from 15 yards for Cheyenne Mountain. Late in the second half, Air Academy captain Alex Granados converted a penalty kick to even the score. But Cheyenne forward Christian Nehme scored with four minutes remaining to give the Kadets the lead and ultimately the hardware with a 2-1 victory over the Indians.
In the second game of the day, Colorado Academy capped their unbeaten season with the 3A state title, defeating The Classical Academy 4-2. The Classical Academy opened scoring early in the game, with Titus Grant netting his 23rd goal of the season in the 4th minute of play. Colorado Academy responded one minute later, though, and didn't stop until the score at halftime was 3-1 Mustangs, with two goals from Robert Wright and one from J.J. Meyers. The Titans were the next to find the net in the second half, with Grant's second goal of the game, but the Mustangs sealed the victory with a fourth goal in the 77th minute from Alex Clinkscales for their second consecutive state title.
In the final match of the day, Pine Creek High School won its first ever 5A state title in a dramatic, double-overtime finish. The Eagles were lead by a stalwart performance from goalkeeper David Meyer, who kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet, and senior Jay Morales, who scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to give his team a 1-0 victory over Rock Canyon High School. Pine Creek's road to the final was equally as exciting, after they defeated the defending state champions Boulder High School by the same 1-0 overtime score, thanks to an Alex Cullen goal. They finish the season with a 17-1-2 record, while Rock Canyon's undefeated season was blemished for a final 16-1-2 record.
