Rapids decline option on goalkeeper Stew Ceus

Backup 'keeper will not return in 2014, is eligible for MLS Re-Entry Draft

After five seasons with the Rapids, goalkeeper Steward Ceus will not return to the club in 2014. The 26-year-old goalkeeper will be eligible to participate in the MLS Re-Entry process, which allows players to move between clubs within the league and begins next week.

“We’ve chosen not to pick up the option for Steward Ceus, so he will be departing from the club,” Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo told ColoradoRapids.com. “Stew had a difficult season this year, and one thing that might’ve been unlucky for him was just how much Clint Irwin stepped up into the role that was cleared when Matt Pickens got hurt. That’s one of the reasons we made the decision to go in a different direction."

Colorado acquired Steward Ceus in the third round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Albany. He made his Rapids debut in a U.S. Open Cup match at Kansas City in 2010, and then started five of the club's six 2011 CONCACAF Champions League games. His MLS debut came late in 2012 when he started the final three matches of the season. Ceus made one regular season appearance for the Rapids in 2013, a 1-0 loss at FC Dallas in the first match of the season.

"He’s been with the Rapids for five seasons, and has grown a great deal as a goalkeeper," Bravo added. "We want to thank him for his service to the club over these last few years.”

Next up for the goalkeeper will be the MLS Re-Entry Draft, which is designed to facilitate the movement of veteran players within the league. A full list of MLS players eligible for the process is expected next week.

“It looks like Stew will be the only Rapids player that will participate in the Re-Entry Draft, as we have a couple others that would be eligible but we think they will opt out,” said Bravo.

Ceus also earned seven caps with Haiti's national team by playing in the 2010 Caribbean Cup and making four starts in 2011 in the early stages of 2014 World Cup Qualifying.
