Colombian defender Germán Mera came to the Rapids on May 6, 2013 under a one-year loan from Colombian club Deportivo Cali to help strengthen Colorado's back line, especially on the left side. Having played out the loan and impressed coaching staff, the Colorado Rapids are now working to ensure Mera will return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in 2014.

“Germán is a player that we’re trying to bring back next year, but we have to renegotiate to make that happen,” said Paul Bravo, Rapids Technical Director, to ColoradoRapids.com.

The terms of Mera’s loan included an option to buy his contract from Deportivo Cali at the end of the first year, but at a steep price. The Rapids have decided to decline the option and renegotiate a new loan deal with Cali to bring Mera back to Colorado for the coming season, something that Bravo is hopeful will happen.

“We think that’s something the player wants to do,” explained Bravo. “We also want to do it, and we think Cali is eager to help out and give Gérman that opportunity. So I would anticipate Germán being back in 2014.”

Mera, a 23-year-old left-footed defender, made his debut with the Rapids on June 1 and appeared in 13 matches throughout the 2013 season. He spent three seasons prior to coming to Colorado with Cali in the Colombian Primera A, where he played a total of 56 games (53 starts) in league and cup play. He also appeared for Cali in the 2011 Copa Sudamericana.
