World Cup Preview: Group C

Rapids staff weigh-in with perspective and predictions for the soccer showcase in Brazil

The Colorado Rapids sales and service staff put together previews of each World Cup group, and we will be running their perspective and predictions on the day that each group opens play. Group C preview is written by Account Executive Thomas Messerich.

Colombia: In a group that is very even, Colombia inch ahead as one of the favorites in Group C. Their powerful attack is dangerous, even though they’ll be missing one of the world’s most lethal finishers, Radamel Falcao, due to injury. With a possible weakness in the defense, Colombia will look to strikers like James Rodriguez and Teófilo Gutiérrez in the final third to outscore their opponents.

Ivory Coast: Ivory Coast is another team that most people will expect to make it out of this group. With legendary talents like Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure, this experienced squad will look to take points from every team they face in Group C. Questions will be raised as to whether this squad is too old and past their golden era, but with strong leadership and seasoned veterans, they will look at Group C as a very winnable group.

Japan: Japan is a team that many will overlook but definitely have the potential to upset teams and advance out of their group. The strength of this team lies in their technical ability with skilled players in Keisuke Honda and Shinji Kagawa. On form, Japan has the potential to beat any team in their group. Look for them to compete to the very end for a top two spot.

Greece: Greece will come into Group C as one of the less favored teams to advance, if only by a little. With a strong defensive structure, Greece will be looking to shut down their opponents attack and feed their most dangerous offensive weapon in Konstantinos Mitroglou who has made a major impact for Olympiakos on the club level, as well as for Greece in the qualifying rounds.

PREDICTED FINISH:

  1. Colombia
  2. Greece
  3. Ivory Coast
  4. Japan
