Argentina should ease through the group stage, but can Messi live up to the hype?

The Colorado Rapids sales and service staff put together previews of each World Cup group, and we will be running their perspective and predictions ahead of each group opening. Group F preview is written by Account Executive Sawyer Frank.

Argentina: The strongest team in Group F and one of the favorites to win the entire tournament, Argentina is captained by arguably the best player in the world, Lionel Messi. Filled with striking power, including Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Gonzalo Higuain, lots of brilliant goals are expected from this team in group play.

Bosnia & Herzegovina: The 2014 World Cup will be the first major tournament appearance for Bosnia & Herzegovina as an independent nation, who have seen recent success under head coach Safet Sušić. Keep an eye on their most famous player Edin Džeko of Manchester City, who is his nation’s all-time leading goal scorer at the age of 28.

Iran: Iran is currently ranked the #1 team in Asia and #37 in the world according to FIFA, despite having missed out on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. They are coached by Carlos Queiroz, who has coached teams such as Real Madrid and Portugal, and enjoyed two spells at Manchester United as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson. The nation’s best World Cup performance was in Argentina in 1978 when they finished 14th.

Nigeria: Nigeria is one of the top African sides at this tournament, and has qualified for five of the last six World Cups. They enter the 2014 event as champions of the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, held in 2013 in South Africa. They possess a truly talented midfield, which including Chelsea players John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses. If they are able to avoid injuries and play to their potential, many expect this side to progress to the knockout stage alongside Argentina.
