Along with teammates Edson Buddle and Marlon Hairston, who each reached special milestones in their careers on Wednesday night, Dillon Powers wrote his own piece of Rapids history in the match against the LA Galaxy.

After an MRI earlier this week revealed that Rapids captain Drew Moor would miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL, second-year midfielder Powers was called upon to wear the armband against the Galaxy, making the 23-year-old the youngest player in club history to assume the captain’s role.

“It was a huge honor; those are big shoes to fill and Drew’s always been such a great leader for us,” said Powers.

Being a leader is not a foreign concept to the former Notre Dame stand-out, who says he’s been a captain on every team he’s played for. Despite his young age, he handled the pressure of captaining his most competitive team yet - and of the disappointing home loss - like a seasoned veteran.

“I just tried to make the transition as seamless as possible. There’s naturally an added level of responsibility and accountability. I think you take a lot of the team’s success and failures on your shoulders. [The loss] hurts a little bit more, and it’s pretty disappointing.”

“I think Dillon has a lot of leadership qualities,” said head coach Pablo Mastroeni, who wore the armband for the Rapids from 2004 until 2012, after which he was traded to the LA Galaxy and Moor assumed the position.

Both Mastroeni and Powers said after the game that the status was not necessarily permanent.

“[Dillon’s] a leader by example,” added Mastroeni. “[He] comes in everyday and works his tail off. Just thinking about this group and where it’s going in years to come and thinking that he could be a very important piece to this team moving forward.”
