Matchday welcome: Colorado Rapids host Real Salt Lake

Big crowd for a big game as rivals RSL come to town for a Rocky Mountain Cup encounter

Rapids Fans:

Welcome to tonight’s Rocky Mountain Cup match against Real Salt Lake! This is always one of the most exciting nights of the season at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, and we’re thrilled that you’ve joined us and the rest of this capacity crowd for what promises to be a great game. As always, this is a league match with much more on the line – last year, we were able to take back the Rocky Mountain Cup from RSL, and this season we have some ground to make up after they won the first match between us this year.

I think it’s always important to highlight Centennial 38 and all the Rapids supporters when talking about the Rocky Mountain Cup, as it was the fans that came up with the trophy that the clubs play for, and they make this rivalry what it is. We know that, as always, we’ll be hearing C38 in full voice in the Terrace at the north end of the stadium, and also in Section 108 on the east sideline. If you want more information on the group, including how to get involved, visit www.C38sg.com.

We’re also reaching a part of the season where every match takes on added importance as we start to look at the standings and where things might end up heading into the playoffs. RSL is currently just ahead of us, but we could tie them for second in the Western Conference with a win. Six of the nine teams in our conference are all within six points of each other, and this is a great chance to get a win over a rival, in our division, and in front of a great crowd.

There are plenty of other exciting things happening with the Rapids these days. Three of our young players are getting special opportunities next week, with Marlon Hairston selected for a United States Under-23 camp, and Shane O’Neill and Dillon Serna both picked for the inaugural MLS Homegrown Game in Portland as part of the All-Star Game festivities. While Shane is still recovering from an injury and may not be able to participate, all three have been working hard to get these chances, and we’re looking forward to watching them on these national stages.

We were also excited to announce that the Mexican national team will be coming to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on September 9 for a friendly against Bolivia, and tickets are already selling fast for that match. You can still get a two-pack that includes a ticket to our game against San Jose on September 27, so be sure to check out our tickets page.

Thanks again for coming out to tonight’s match, and feel free to stop by tomorrow morning’s Reserve team game against RSL, at 11 a.m. on Field 20 here at the complex. Remember also that our next home game is August 20 against the LA Galaxy; we have plenty of exciting things planned for that game that you’ll be hearing about in the next couple weeks.

As always, if you need anything, please speak to a Rapids Customer Service Representative, and I’m always available on Twitter at @tkhinchey3.

Come on you Rapids!
