OTHER PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Began his career with Glasgow club Celtic, and he was a product of Glasgow club's prestigious youth academy where he developed as a youngster until the age of 18 when Celtic offered him a professional contract. With Celtic's large reputation across Europe and Smith only just turning professional there were not many first team chances available to him, mainly due to the club's large number of foreign players. Therefore, he was loaned out to Livingston. When Smith returned to Glasgow there were still limited opportunities for first team football, he decided it was time to move on. He received an offer from Holland in 2004 from ADO Den Haag. He only spent one season with the club playing in 30 matches but he improved dramatically after experiencing a different style of football.
  • In the summer of 2005, signed with Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen FC. In August 2005, Smith struck a late winner as Aberdeen defeated rivals Rangers in a league match for the first time since April 1998, wowing the Aberdeen support in only his third competitive game for the club. In December 2007, Smith played a key role in Aberdeen's victory over Danish team FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Cup, scoring two goals in the 4-0 victory that saw Aberdeen through to the last 32 of the competition. From 2005-2009, he appeared in 81 games with 12 goals with Aberdeen.
