MLS CAREER

2012

  • Only played the first two games of the season and was put on the injured list for the remainder of 2012 due to concussions.
  • Received Colorado Rapids award for Humanitarian of the Year.

2011

  • On Aug. 20, Mastroeni became only the 3rd player in MLS history to start 300 regular season matches. As of the end of the 2011 season, he leads the league for most all-time games started by an active MLS player (306 games started). Retired midfielder Steve Ralson is the only MLS player to start more career regular season games (372).
  • Played his 300th career match and his 200th Rapids game on 6/18 against LA. As of the beginning of the 2012 season, Mastroeni is 9th overall for all-time regular season games played with 316.
  • Scored one goal in the 2011 season in a 2-1 win at Philadelphia Union (7/29).
  • Notched four assists in 2011, including an assist in two consecutive matches on 8/13 and 8/20.        
  • Played and started one CONCACAF Champions League match at Santos Laguna (9/13).
  • Missed the final match of the regular season (10/22 vs. VAN) and all three playoff matches due to a concussion suffered on 10/14 against Real Salt Lake.

2010

  • Recognized as the Rapids Most Valuable Player for the third time in his career.
  • Started in a career-high tying 29 games and scored a career-high tying two goals and added three assists.
  • Became the leader for most games played in Rapids history with 179 at New York on 9/11, the leader in most games started in Rapids history with 171 on 8/28 and the leader for the most minutes played in Rapids history with 14,787 on 8/14, surpassing former leader Chris Henderson in all three categories.
  • Playoffs: Started and played every minute in all four playoff games during Rapids championship run. Scored game-winner vs. Columbus (10/28) in first leg of Semifinals. 

2009

  • Started in 25 games, playing 2,162 minutes and scored one goal and registered three assists.
  • Scored his first goal in over four years vs. Chivas USA (8/8). His goal came just 26 seconds into the match marking the sixth fastest goal scored in MLS history and the second fastest in Colorado history.
  • Recorded his first assist in almost two years at Columbus (4/11).

2008

  • Rapids MVP for a second straight year.
  • Named to his ninth overall and ninth consecutive MLS All-Star team, which was tops among the 18 players on the roster and tied for second-most in MLS history.
  • Played 25 matches with 23 starts (both highs while with Colorado).
  • Re-signed with the club to a multi-year contract.

2007

  • Took home Rapids Most Valuable Player Award.
  • Started 21 of the 23 games he appeared in while playing 1,865 minutes and added one assist on the season.
  • Named to MLS All-Star team.

2006

  • Started 20 games.
  • Was named to the U.S. National Team for 2006 World Cup and returned to play for Colorado on July 4.
  • Named to the MLS All-Star team, but did not play in the game.

2005

  • Played in 14 games, 12 as a starter and scored one goal.
  • Scored his first Rapids goal vs. Columbus (4/23).
  • Named to the 2005 MLS All-Star Inactive Roster.

2004

  • Awarded Rapids “Black & Blue Player of the Year Award”.
  • Was named the Rapids team captain on Sept. 23 after John Spencer relinquished the captain’s armband.
  • Played and started in 17 games.
  • Named to the MLS All-Star team, but did not play in the game.

2003

  • Started all 18 games that he appeared in for the Rapids and recorded two assists.
  • Missed a number of games while on National Team duty at the FIFA Confederations Cup and CONCACAF Gold Cup.
  • Named to the MLS All-Star Inactive Roster.

2002

  • Acquired by Colorado with the first pick in the MLS Allocation Draft.
  • Earned a spot on the U.S. National Team for the World Cup in Japan/Korea, causing him to miss two months of MLS action.
  • Tallied his first point as a member of the Rapids with an assist against L.A. (7/13).

2001

  • In his final season with Miami, scored the first two goals of his MLS career and started all 25 games in which he played.
  • Scored the first goal of his career against Tampa Bay (5/19).
  • Was named as the Fusion’s ADT Defender of the Year for the third straight season and was part of the Pepsi Best XI for the first time in his career.

  • Selected by Miami in the second round (13th overall) of the College Draft.

  • Played in three World Cup Qualifier matches against Costa Rica (6/3), Honduras (6/6) and Trinidad & Tobago (4/1).

2008

  • Made five appearances, including four starts.
  • Helped led the U.S. to a 2-0 win over Guatemala in the first-ever World Cup qualifier in Colorado on November 19.

2007

  • Started in all seven games in which he appeared.
  • Named to the 2007 US Gold Cup squad who won the championship. Also named to 2007 Gold Cup Best XI, while collecting his third confederation championship medal.
  • Captained the U.S. to a 2-0 victory against Mexico in his hometown of Phoenix.

2006

  • Played in seven games with five starts.
  • Named to his second consecutive US World Cup squad on May 2.
  • Tallied his 50th career cap vs. Italy.

2005

  • Appeared in 11 games, 10 as a starter.
  • Earned Man of the Match honors in qualifier vs. Guatemala (9/7).
  • Wore captain’s armband in three matches on the year.

2004

  • Had seven appearances with five starts.
  • Earned Man of the Match honors in 1-1 WCQ draw with Jamaica in Columbus.

  • Appeared in 12 games, 11 as a starter.
  • Was called into Bruce Arena’s World Cup squad for Japan/Korea 2002 despite having never appeared in a qualifier.
  • Started in three of the United States’ five matches as the Americans reached the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time since 1930.
  • Started the last four games of the 2002 Gold Cup.

2001

  • Played in two games with one start.
  • Earned his first cap for the United States National Team in a friendly against Ecuador on June 7.
  • Made first start for the U.S. against Ecuador (6/7).

  • First team All-ACC and All-Region as a senior for the Wolfpack in 1997.

PERSONAL

  • Born in Argentina of Italian heritage, he became a United States citizen in 2001.
  • Moved to the U.S. at the age of four.
  • Son of Elci and Frank Mastroeni, has one brother, Diego.
  • Proposed to wife, Kelly Long, during a halftime television interview of the Fusion’s match Sept. 5, 2000 at the MetroStars.
