College seniors who had exhausted their eligibility were invited to participate by the Rapids’ coaching staff after a scouring of university matches nationwide in 2005.
Players from Tennessee Massachusetts Washington DC Michigan and California joined players from local colleges like the University of Denver University of Colorado Air Force Academy and Colorado School of Mines.
The participants traveled to Westminster and participated in the day's activities despite the cold and snow early Saturday morning.
They were greeted by Rapids General Manager and C.O.O. Charlie Wright and then Assistant Coach John Murphy who gave the participants a rundown of the day before the event was moved to a local outdoor sports turf surface.
The early session consisted of small-sided contests before lunch was served back at the training facility. During lunch the coaches conducted individual interviews to further assess the potential of the youngsters. The focus of the afternoon session was on 11 v 11 play. The morning conditions were slippery but by later in the day most of the snow had melted and the players were able to move much more effectively.
The Rapids are planning to make the College Combine an annual event for graduating college seniors. The coaching staff along with their colleagues in the college and youth game will continue to assist in identifying qualified individuals for future combines.
By 2007 the Colorado Rapids plan to have this combine set the standard of excellence for the rest of MLS as this unique event will be held at the state-of-the-art new Rapids stadium complex currently under construction.
Interested college juniors can keep their eyes on the Rapids website for an announcement of next December’s event. Email requests or questions regarding the Rapids College Combine should be sent to email@example.com.
