The first goal of the scrimmage came in the 3rd minute when Wolde Harris slid a shot past FIU’s goalkeeper. The play started off the foot of Chris Carrieri on a free kick from 35 yards out. Carrieri sent an outswinging cross into the heart of the penalty box where draftee Eugene Sepuya beat his defender for the header. The ball landed in the path of Harris who was able to get off a shot as he was being pulled down by his marker for the 1-0 lead.
The second goal of the game came in the 47th minute when midfielder Kyle Beckerman beat the opposing goalkeeper with an accurate shot from 20 yards out. Beckerman received a pass from Carrieri at the top of the penalty box with two defenders marking him. The former US Under-23 National Team midfielder utilized an accurate first touch to create enough space between the defenders to get his shot on goal and make the game 2-0.
Veteran midfielder Chris Henderson netted the third goal of the day in the 75th minute from the penalty kick spot. Luchi Gonzalez and Henderson combined in a give-and-go play that left the former Peruvian first division player running alone towards the FIU goal. Gonzalez was taken down for the referee to call the penalty kick. Henderson placed his PK to the right of the diving goalkeeper for the tally.
Beckerman added his second on the day in the 85th minute when he found a free ball at the top of the penalty area and sent it to the back of the net with a well placed left-footed shot.
The Rapids (1-1-1 2005 preseason record) will take on FC Dornach from Switzerland tomorrow at 9:00 a.m at the Sunrise Hilton training facility.
