Broomfield CO (Tuesday November 6 2007) – Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul spent this afternoon shopping at the Dick’s Sporting Goods in the Flatirons Crossing Mall for soccer equipment to send to aid his former youth soccer club in Senegal.
Joined by mascots Edson the Eagle and Jorge el Mapache Rapids Cheerleaders as well as representatives from Dick's Sporting Goods and the Rapids Foundation the Colorado ‘keeper spent thousands of dollars buying all sorts of items a soccer club would require for underserved kids in his home country.
The club will receive balls bags goals shin guards and full kits for their next season. The Rapids Foundation collected all the equipment from the afternoon and will box up and ship the items to Senegal this week.
After visiting his home country before the 2007 season Coundoul realized he needed to use his position as a major league athlete to give back to his native community.
This season Coundoul and the Rapids Community Care Foundation desgined manufacutred and sold limited-edition "Bouna Time" commemorative jerseys to raise the money for this charity fund which he spent today.
In a matter of coincidental timing in addition to his effort of giving back to his native county Coundoul the Rapids' 2007 Humanitarian of the Year just found out this week that he was called up to represent the Senegalese national team in a couple of upcoming international friendlies against Mali and Morocco in Paris on Nov. 17 and 21.
