Fans of the popular video game had the chance to register to battle it out in a tightly-contested pregame touranament in the stadium's Cantina for the chance to advance to the championship face-off which took place on the stadium's field at halftime in front of the crowd!
The Rapids hooked the video game system up to all the 12 TV's in the Cantina as well as to the restaurant's sound system giving contestants the chance to blow away spectators throughout the Cantina with their performance!
Contestants of all ages participated in a head-to-head contest in front of the celebrity judges Renee Herlocker Nick Cage and Tyler Maun who were looking for not only aptitude and skill level of playing the game itself but also awarded performance and style points.
Comcast was on hand filming contestants performing for exclusive footage that will be shown on Comcast's On Demand channel for fans to check out starting July 4! Find On Demand by pressing Channel 1 on your cable remote to access On Demand and you'll be able to navigate through the on-screen tabs to find video of contestants in action!
People can find the V.O.D version using Comcast ON DEMAND only if they have "digital cable" on or after July 4th at the following location: ON DEMAND (Channel 1)/Your Colorado/CET/CET Sports/More Sports/Rapids Music Contest.
Fans not registered for the tournament also had the chance to play the game for free on the video screen embedded Comcast's mobile TV truck that was set up outside the Cantina.
After all contestants performed two songs each the judges' scores came through. The two contestants chosen to duke it out at halftime were 10-year old youth phenom Ben Eberle and Caleb Nelson a dead ringer for Guns 'N Roses guitarist "Slash".
As haltime approached the contestants could feel the nervous energy in the crowd as the two finalists were ready to rock out the stadium! Each contestant got exactly 2 minutes to play the song of their choice up on the stadium's giant 52-foot video board on a split screen with the stadium's high-tech sound system thumping out their performance at high decibels.
It was a tight race with Ben the youngster wowing the crowd with his theatrics and technical ability while Caleb won over fans with his acrobatic posturing and behind-the-head guitar playing.
The finalist who received the loudest applause from the crowd was guaranteed the grand prize and in the end it was a close call but the fans chose Ben Eberle as this year's winner of the Rapids Guitar Hero Tournament presented by Comcast. He took home the grand prize which included prizes from both the Rapids and Comcast as well as free round-trip airline tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines.
