The Boulder PDL squad came out with all cylinders firing as they were looking for the upset against the MLS team. For their part the Rapids who were being guided by assistant coaches Steve Trittschuh and John Murphy started a team of mostly reserve players who played the first hour of the scrimmage.
In the first half the Black and Blue’s Wolde Harris had two long range rockets that the Boulder keeper was forced to smother. The Rapids also headed two balls just wide of the opposing team's net in the opening 45.
On the other end of the field the Rapids Reserve's forwards were held in check but for two opportunities. On the first Colin Clark broke down the left touchline and crossed the ball to Ryan Johnson who headed it off the Rapids' post. Four minutes from the halftime whistle Johnson latched onto a nicely-played through ball and barely touched the ball past an onrushing Byron Foss.
After a Trittschuh tongue-lashing at the intermission Colorado came out in the second half and took control of the match. In the 50th minute all of Harris’ hard worked paid off as he took the ball in the box danced around the keeper and buried it in the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.
On the hour mark with the game still knotted up at one apiece the Rapids made a nine player substitution in which they inserted most of their regular starters.
Fifteen minutes later the move paid off when Luchi Gonzalez took a free kick and found the head of Alain Nkong who put the Black & Blue up for good. Three minutes from full time Kyle Beckerman tickled the twine after taking a pass from Ricky Lewis.
