DC United forward Jamil Walker created the first scoring opportunity for the home team in the 5th minute when he one-timed a high ball from the top of the Rapids 18 yard box. His powerful shot bounced off Joe Cannon's crossbar before sailing out of bounds.
The Rapids responded two minutes later when newly-acquired Jovan Kirovski headed a cross from his former Manchester United teammate Terry Cooke. Kirovski connected inside of the home team's penalty area but his bouncing header was well contained by D.C. goalkeeper Nick Rimando.
Midfielder Eric Denton had the best scoring opportunity for the Rapids in the first half when he received a long cross on the far side of D.C.'s penalty area where he was running in without a mark. From just 12 yards out Denton controlled the cross but was pressured by a defender moments before he unleashed a left footed shot that went flying into the stands.
The first goal of the match came in the 65th minute as Rapids substitute goalkeeper Byron Foss was beaten by an accurate shot from 20 yards out. Argentine midfielder Christian Gomez curved a free kick over the Rapids' defensive wall and into the upper right corner of the Rapids' net where Foss reached the ball but was unable to deflect it giving DC a 1-0 lead.
The second tally of the game came in the 80th minute when Jaime Moreno cleared just enough space inside of the visiting team's penalty area to get a well-placed shot on goal that beat Foss to his far post.
Goalkeeper Joe Cannon left the field with a sore left abdominal strain that had been bothering him for over a week. He will be evaluated on Monday by the team's medical staff.
Midfielder Alain Nkong who recently returned to the United States after missing two games due to personal reasons will be suspended for the next match due to caution point accumulation from a yellow card he received during the match.
Referee Hilario Grajeda issued a total of nine yellow cards in a game that saw 42 fouls. Six of the cards were shown to the Black and Blue.
The Rapids will next return home to face their Western Division rivals Real Salt Lake this Wednesday September 21st at 7:30 p.m. (MT) at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
