COMMERCE CITY COLO. (Monday May 4 2009) – The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club is scheduled to play Seattle Sounders FC on Tuesday May 26 at Starfire Sports Stadium at 8:00 pm MT in their second play-in match for qualification for America’s oldest sporting tournament.
This match comes only three days following the Sounders' only regular season game of the 2009 season in Colorado on May 23.

The Rapids advanced to their second qualifying match of this year’s Open Cup competition by defeating the LA Galaxy in a penalty kick shootout 4-2 back on April 7 at The Home Depot Center.
This will be the third time in U.S Open Cup play history that these teams will face each other. In 2007 Colorado fell to the then USL-1 side Seattle 0-5 at in a Quarterfinal match-up. The Rapids captured a 1-0 victory over the Sounders back in 1999 in the Third Round.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.
The top six MLS teams (Chivas USA Columbus Chicago Houston Kansas City and New England) from 2008 qualified for the Open Cup while the Rapids and the other three American teams in MLS (D.C. United New York and Seattle) left following opening play-in matches are forced to go through qualifying to reach the tournament's Round of 16.
