A free kick in the 9th minute created the first scoring opportunity for the Red side when Martin Morales the Uruguayan invitee curved the ball over the defensive wall towards the upper left corner of Byron Foss’s goal. The second-year Rapids goalkeeper tipped the ball just enough to have it hit the crossbar with a spectacular dive.
Forwards Jeff Cunningham and Pedro Peguero combined on a couple of opportunities that were well controlled by Foss and the yellow team’s defense.
In the 20th minute Peguero received a through ball from Cunningham at the top of the penalty area. The Haitian international unleashed a shot that went just inches wide of Foss’s right post.
The first goal of the match came in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Morales curved a ball into the heart of the penalty area where he found an onrushing Nat Borchers who struck it first-time. The Rapids defender’s shot hit the crossbar before bouncing directly into Cunningham’s path who slid it home for the first tally on the day.
On the other side of the field Yellow team forward Chris Carrieri surprised Joe Cannon in the 30th minute when the 5'8" forward struck a 30-yard ball aimed for the upper right corner. Cannon had to make a spectacular save to deny what would have been a sure goal.
The second half saw a couple of substitutions including the spring training debut of former Jamaican international and MLS veteran Wolde Harris. The former New England Revolution forward who joined the team in Florida yesterday spent last season playing in Sweden with FC Boden.
Cunningham again created a good scoring opportunity in the 55th minute when a through ball by midfielder Kyle Beckerman left him in a one-on-one situation with goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul. The invitee goalie came well off his line closing the shooting angle and forcing Cunningham to dribble past him and fire a shot that missed the goal by inches.
The second goal of the game came in the 61st minute when Morales finished a well-placed pass by EPL veteran Terry Cooke lofting his shot over an onrushing Coundoul to secure the victory for the Red side.
The Rapids will take on Florida International University tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. (ET) at the Sunrise Hilton field.
