All five African berths have been decided: Angola Ghana Ivory Coast Togo and Tunisia.
Japan Iran South Korea and Saudi Arabia have already qualified. Uzbekistan and Bahrain are tied 1-1 in their playoff with the second leg in Manama on Wednesday. The winner will meet the third-place CONCACAF team either Trinidad and Tobago or Guatemala for place in the finals.
Germany (host) Ukraine Netherlands Poland England Croatia Italy and Portugal have qualified. Three more berths will be filled Wednesday; three others will be decided in playoffs next month.
The Czech Republic and Romania can still finish second behind the Netherlands. The Czechs face Finland while Romania has no games left. A Czech win would guarantee second place and a playoff spot. If the Czechs draw or lose Romania finishes second.
Ukraine has already won the group with Turkey Denmark and Greece still fighting for the playoff spot. Turkey can advance to the playoffs with a win at Albania. Denmark can get a playoff berth if it beats Kazakhstan and Turkey draws while Greece needs to beat Georgia and hope Turkey loses and Denmark fails to win.
Portugal has won Group 3 and either Russia or Slovakia who face each other in Bratislava will get the playoff spot. Slovakia needs only a draw to advance.
France Switzerland and Ireland can all win Group 4 with unbeaten Israel still in the hunt for the second-place playoff spot. The 1998 champions host Cyprus on Wednesday while Switzerland goes to Ireland. Israel has played all its games. France can win the group with a victory if Switzerland does not win in Dublin. The Swiss can take the group with a win or draw as long as France draws or loses. Ireland needs to win and hope France loses or draws. Israel can get second if there are draws in Paris and Dublin.
Italy has won the group while Norway has clinched the playoff spot. Norway plays at Belarus while Italy hosts Moldova.
Poland and England play at Old Trafford. Both have already qualified but the winner of the match will also win the group. If England loses or draws it will finish second but still advance as one of the best second-place teams. The same applies if Poland loses and finishes second.
Qualification is down to the last round. Spain which plays at San Marino trails Serbia-Montenegro by two points. Serbia-Montenegro hosts third-place Bosnia-Herzegovina in Belgrade. The Serbs will finish first with a win but Bosnia can also win the group with a victory and a loss or draw by Spain.
Croatia has already qualified but Sweden can still win the group. The Swedes host Iceland. Croatia leads Sweden by two points but a Swedish win combined with a Croatian loss at Hungary will leave the Croats with one of two best runner-up spots.
The United States Mexico and Costa Rica have qualified. Trinidad and Tobago or Guatemala will earn a playoff spot and play either Uzbekistan or Bahrain whose playoff was 1-1 after the first leg for a place in the finals. Trinidad goes through if it beats Mexico regardless of the result between Guatemala and Costa Rica. If Trinidad loses Guatemala will get the playoff with a win. If Trinidad draws and Guatemala wins Guatemala will finish fourth.
Argentina Brazil Ecuador and Paraguay have already qualified. Whoever finishes fifth will play Oceania winner Australia in a two-legged playoff in November. Uruguay Colombia and Chile are in contention. If Uruguay beats Argentina on Wednesday it will go to the playoffs. If Uruguay loses it will go to the playoffs if Colombia and Chile both draw their games. That also applies if all three draw their games. If Uruguay loses and Colombia and Chile win either Colombia or Chile will take the fifth spot depending on their final goal difference. Chile hosts Ecuador; Colombia is at Paraguay.
