COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Rapids broke their seven-match winless streak when Quakes ‘keeper Jon Busch scooped up a 25th minute cross from Omar Cummings from outside the box on the right wing then lost his hold on the ball as it trickled through his hands and into the goal.
Cummings was aiming for a charging Colin Clark, but the deflection off Busch went the Rapids way for a well-deserved own goal. Colorado had been building momentum for 15 minutes, with increased possession and ever-heightening pressure in the final third.
San Jose controlled the pace in the first 10 minutes of the match, dominating on possession while Colorado countered with an occasional break, but couldn’t link up for a sustained attack on their home turf.
The Rapids built steam after the early minutes, finding their rhythm and consistently control possession through the remainder of the first half. The Earthquakes headed to the changing room being outshot 7-2 by their hosts.
The Quakes had one of their best chances in the 70th minute, with Bobby Convey finding Arturo Alvarez inside the box, but ‘keeper Matt Pickens saved the shot to preserve the clean sheet. They followed with a direct kick from Convey in the 73rd minute that Pickens headed out from three yards in front of the net.
The Rapids kept the pressure on throughout the second half, with Cummings remaining in the midst of several opportunities, and with 66th minutes substitution Claudio Lopez stealing a ball at midfield and taking it all the way into the box for a hard shot on goal that Busch was able to stop for his first save of the match. Mehdi Ballouchy, a 58th minute substitution for an injured Colin Clark, was alone for a 90th minute shot from just inside the box, but Busch saved it.
Colorado’s win over the Earthquakes was its first in 12 head-to-head matches, dating back to April of 2004. The Rapids also extended their undefeated stretch at home to six matches, picking up after their lone loss in Commerce City May 5 against L.A.
