Commerce City, Colo. (June 21) - The older age groups of the Colorado Rapids Academy will each be competing against teams from other states over the next six days, with games being played in Boise, Idaho and Frisco, Texas.
COLORADO RAPIDS' YOUTH SOCCER U-16s:
After winning the Colorado State Cup on May 8, the Colorado Rapids (U.S. Youth Soccer) U-16 boys advanced to the Region IV Championships this week in Boise, Idaho, competing for the right to represent the far west region at the national level next month. The Region IV Championships consist of the U-16 state champion from the 14 western states plus two wild card teams. Team are divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams after pool play advancing to the quarterfinals.
The Rapids' U-16s, led by head coach David Proctor, on Monday tied Idaho's BNSC Premier 1-1. The Rapids lost to Washington's Eastside FC 94 Red, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon and will finish group play tomorrow against Idaho Rush Nike.
The winner of the Region IV Championship will advance to U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona on July 26-31.
COLORADO RAPIDS DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY TEAMS (Elite teams that compete in the prestigious U.S. Soccer Development Academy):
Neither of the Colorado Rapids Development Academy teams, the U-16s or U-18s, qualified for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy playoffs, however both teams will be participating at concurrent Showcase Tournament at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas from June 24-28. Each team in the Showcase will compete against three other teams in their age-group and playing before college coaches, with the Rapids' teams first opponent being Crossfire Premier from Kirkland, Washington.
