Denver, CO – August 12, 2011 – Over 40 Colorado non-profit cancer organizations, 1,400 participants and 125 volunteers came together for one mission: to partner in the fight against cancer at the third annual Step Up for Cancer event, which took place at Dick's Sporting Goods Park Sunday, August 7th from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Participants of Step Up for Cancer had the unique opportunity to earn pledges for the cancer charity of their choice by walking up and down a portion or all of the 33 rows of stairs at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Anyone – regardless of their age or athletic ability – was invited to walk, climb, or run the course circling the interior of the stadium. Prizes were awarded for the Elite timed heat for competitive racers and there was also an Accessible course available for those who didn’t want or weren’t able to walk stairs. Local bands entertained steppers while they completed the course. Steppers also had the opportunity to take part in restorative yoga and massage therapy.
The non-profit organizations that partnered with Step Up for Cancer were placed in the stadium concourse creating a “Community Village” that provided a vast amount of information regarding the many facets of cancer including healthy living, prevention, early detection, treatment, access to care, patient and caregiver support, research, advocacy and survivorship. Step Up for Cancer is the only event in Colorado that has brought so many non-profits together under one roof to work side-by-side to create awareness.
“We are thrilled with the success of the third annual Step Up for Cancer this year with approximately $135,000 raised for local nonprofit cancer organizations,” said Amy Venturi, Step Up for Cancer Event Director. “We would like to again thank the volunteers and participating non-profits who worked so hard to make this event possible and we are already looking forward to the fourth annual Step Up for Cancer in 2012. This event provides such a unique opportunity to bring the Colorado community together on one day to showcase the multitude of organizations that are working to educate and support Coloradoans fighting cancer.”
Step Up for Cancer also wishes to thank presenting partners Key Bank, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and HealthONE and event sponsors CBS4 Denver, Denver Post, Kroenke Sports Charities, Vitamin Water, Frederic Printing and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park for making the event possible.
