COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Sept. 1, 2011) – The Colorado Rapids Reserves recorded their second win of the season, earning a 3-0 shutout over the Houston Dynamo Reserves at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Thursday morning. Rapids forward Quincy Amarikwa had a goal and two assists, while forward Andre Akpan scored on both of Amarikwa’s assists. With the victory – the second in five days – the Rapids Reserves improve to 2-5-1 on the season, while the Dynamo Reserves fall to 4-3-0.
The Rapids opened the scoring early in the game, coming off a play in the fourth minute when midfielder Davy Armstrong recovered a ball in the defensive half and distributed to trialist Sterling Copeland on the right flank. Copeland beat his defender and crossed the ball in to an on-rushing Amarikwa who first-timed the ball past Dynamo keeper Tyler Deric.
Ten minutes before the first half ended, the Rapids doubled their lead after drawing a foul outside the Dynamo 18-yard box. A quick restart by Amariwka sent the ball to Akpan, who took a touch around Deric and slotted a low shot past the goalkeeper to give the Rapids a 2-0 lead.
Also in the first half, Colorado defender Scott Palguta re-directed a corner that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out, and Armstrong beat four Dynamo players to find himself on a one-v-one with the 'keeper, who forced Armstrong's shot wide.
Houston threatened the Rapids goal on several occasions but were unable to convert. In the 11th minute, the Dynamo had a goal called back after Jason Garey maneuvered past the Rapids back line and beat goalkeeper Ian Joyce due to an earlier foul called on Cam Weaver.
Akpan struck once again, scoring the game’s final goal in the 60th minute after combining with Amarikwa to zig-zag through the Dynamo defense. Ten minutes later, Houston almost pulled a goal back with free kick at the top of the box, but Colin Clark’s shot was saved by Joyce to keep the shutout intact.
The Dynamo Reserves will visit Sporting Kansas City on September 10 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in their next match, while the Rapids will next face another Texas team, FC Dallas, on October 2 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
