Tukwila, WA – The game couldn’t start any worse for the Rapids as in the 3rd minute, Kara Kuttler crossed the ball into the Rapids box and found Alex Morgan, who headed the ball into the right corner for a 1-0 Sounders lead. It would prove to be uphill from there for the Rapids.
The Rapids worked hard en tried to play the ball around, but a very experienced Seattle Sounders team, in front of a big home crowd, was able to deal with the pressure.
In the 9th minute, Morgan got to the end line and crossed the ball into the box where she found Lindsey Patterson’s feet for the second Sounders goal of the night.
It was clear that the previous two games in three days in Canada had consequences for the Rapids’ play. Although the players were tireless in their efforts they found it hard to create real goal scoring opportunities.
Three minutes before the end of the game, the Sounders scored the final goal of the game off a free kick from Melanie Cox to put the final score on the scoreboard.
“We tried to play hard and stop them from using their strong midfield,” said Daniel Clitnovici, Colorado Rapids Women head coach. “They have a few good players in midfield and up top and our plan was to stop them getting the ball. Unfortunately for us Seattle was very strong today and they exploited our mistakes, however small, very well. Our girls played against a world class team today, and it’s in these sort of games that they will learn. We are a new team, with a lot of young players, and these are the experiences they have to take with them to become stronger and better players,” Clitnovici added on a positive note.
The Rapids return to action on Friday, June 8th at 6 PM when they host the Pali Blues from California.
