Some of the men around Dick's Sporting Goods Park will be looking even goofier than normal during the month of November, but all for a good cause.
This year, 16 front office staffers will (attempt to) grow ‘Mo’s (moustaches) to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.
President Tim Hinchey is joined by David Burke, Brian Crookham, Ossie Hamrick, Lionel Orozco, David Lindholm, Chris Greenley, Jordan Allerding, Caleb Alexander, Frank Valdez, Matt McKinney, Chris Hoffner, Greg Harris, and Alex Teal in joining the annual nation-wide Movember efforts and will be documenting their 'staches as they seek donations for the charities.
And KSE Charities community relations manager, Val Holland, is leading the women's efforts to participate. Val has signed up as a 'Mo Sista' and has created her own 'MoSpaces to support her father.
Why Men's Health? 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 6 American men and 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Rates of prostate cancer cases in men are comparable to the rates of breast cancer cases in women.
In 2011, the first year of MLS W.O.R.K.S. league-wide Movember campaign, players, supporters and staff throughout the League joined together to raise approximately $45,000. To date, globally over 1.1 million people have participated, raising $174 million USD.
MLS W.O.R.K.S. will match funds raised by the highest individual fundraiser in the MLS Network (individual person, not team). The highest fundraiser will also receive the Soccer Kicks Cancer Prize Pack, which includes:
