On Friday the Rapids acquired Danny Mwanga (above) - 2010's first overall SuperDraft pick - from the Portland Timbers in exchange for Colorado's top pick in the 2015 SuperDraft. When he makes his first appearance for the Rapids, he'll be 8th former top draft pick to play for Colorado.
From 1996-1999 the league held both a college draft and supplemental draft, which was used to select players that had previously played in other divisions or pro leagues. In 2001, the annual drafts were combined and renamed the MLS SuperDraft.
While only holding the top pick in the drafts once, Colorado has throughout the years acquired seven other former top picks. Here's a look at all of them:
Former #1 overall picks in the College / SuperDraft that have played for the Colorado Rapids:
1996: Matt McKeon - Drafted #1 by Kansas City out of St. Louis University. McKeon was acquired by Colorado from KC in exchange for Chris Henderson on November 19, 1998. It turned out to be a one year stint. After playing 28 games for Colorado, the Rapids sent him back to KC on Feb. 3, 2000 along with Peter Vermes and a draft pick for Scott Vermillion, an allocation, and the #20 pick in the 2000 draft.
1997: Tahj Jakins - The only time Colorado has had the top pick in the annual draft. He made 60 appearances in three years before he was waived on April 5, 2000. He was picked up by KC and left MLS following the 2001 season.
1998: Leo Cullen - Drafted #1 by the Miami Fusion out of Maryland. After playing 3.5 seasons for Miami, and another 2.5 for New England, Cullen did not play in 2004. The Rapids acquired his rights from New England on Jan. 14, 2005. He played 15 matches for Colorado that year before retiring.
1999: Jason Moore - Drafted #1 by D.C. United out of Virginia University. After winning the MLS Cup with United in his rookie year, the Rapids acquired the midfielder from DC on Feb. 18, 2000 in exchange for Colorado's top 2001 pick. Moore played two seasons in Colorado before being waved in 2002. He played his final two seasons in Chicago and New England.
2000: Steve Shak - Drafted #1 by New York (then the MetroStars) out of UCLA. Shak was acquired by the Rapids on Aug. 9, 2001 from New York along with their 2002 second-round pick in exchange for midfielder Ross Paule and the Rapids' 2002 third-round pick. After starting 24 of the 32 games he appearend for NY, he only started in 4 of his 6 games for Colorado before leaving MLS after the 2002 season.
2001: Chris Carriei - Drafted #1 by San Jose out of North Carolina. Carrieri only played five games for the Earthquakes before he was acquired by Colorado in exchange for Junio Agogo on June 13, 2001. Carrieri scored 5 goals in 14 games during his rookie year, and added 11 more goals his sophmore season. His last season with the Rapids was in 2003, when he scored three goals and added eight assists in 30 games.
2006: Marvell Wynne - Drafted #1 by New York out of UCLA. The speedy defender was traded by New York to Toronto in his second year. After three years in Canada, the Rapids traded for him on March 25, 2010 in exchange for Nick LaBrocca. Wynne has since signed two new deals with the Rapids and has averaged 28 games for Colorado the last three seasons.
