DENVER, Co. – The Colorado Rapids Women got their second W-League victory of the season on Tuesday in a 1-0 win over the Bay Area Breeze at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Last season's top scorer, Erin Gunther (pictured above, right), grabbed the only goal of the game after 20 minutes. Gunther received the ball back from Rapids striker Chloe Roberts, before hitting a hopeful shot from distance, which deceived the Breeze keeper Yiana Dimmitt and gave the Rapids the lead.
That lead was almost doubled late in the first half when Roberts deflected a low cross on goal, but goalkeeper Dimmitt blocked the shot.
The Rapids had 10 shots on goal in the first half but could not improve upon the 1-0 scoreline before halftime.
There was a change in momentum after the interval, as the Breeze outshot the Rapids 5-2. Bay Area had their best chance to equalize midway through the second half when forward Brandi Vega was played through on goal but Colorado’s goalkeeper Hannah Clark raced out and made a great save.
The Rapids defended well as the Bay Area Breeze pushed for an equalizer. Neither team could score in the second half as Colorado got their second shutout and second win of the season.
"We needed this," Head Coach Daniel Clitnovici told ColoradoRapids.com. "We've four games left. Four games that we're very confident with, but this is football, and anything can happen."
Rapids Women are back in action on Thursday, taking on Santa Clarita Blue Heat at 6 p.m. on Dick's Sporting Goods Park Field 20. Tickets are available by clicking here.
