Denver, CO – The Colorado Rapids Women finished their 2013 W-League season with a tough 2-1 loss to the LA Strikers on Thursday evening. The Rapids took the lead early in the second half but the Strikers found two late goals to earn the victory.
It was a very physical game with the two teams battling it out for third place in the league. Despite both teams having decent chances, neither side could open the scoring in the first half.
Five minutes into the second half Kristin Hamilton raced onto a through-ball from Chloe Roberts and put the ball past the LA keeper into the net. It was Hamilton’s 8th goal of the season, the most of any player in the W-League’s Western Conference.
With the wind at their back, the LA Strikers turned up the pressure and equalized in the 78th minute. The Strikers sent in a long throw that was headed in by Fernandez. Just minutes later, the Rapids Women found the back of the net again, but their celebrations were cut short by a dubious offside flag. The Rapids Women clearly felt the goal should have stood.
With the score at 1-1 both teams pushed for the winner. With just 5 minutes left, the Strikers were able to win the game when a low cross deflected off of Moore’s leg and into the net.
Despite the loss, Colorado finished 4th in the W-League Western Conference after a much improved season compared to their 2012 campaign.
