Led by Technical Director Paul Bravo, the Colorado Rapids staff heads to Philadelphia this week with five picks in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, including three in the first two rounds.
The 2014 MLS SuperDraft will include four rounds and 72 overall selections. The first two rounds will take place in Philadelphia on Thursday, January 16 (10 a.m. MT, live on ESPN News), with the final two rounds taking place on Tuesday, Jan. 21 via a conference call.
The first nine selections are currently held by clubs that did not qualify for the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish. The remaining 10 positions currently belong to clubs that were eliminated in the same round of the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs, in reverse order of regular season finish.
Colorado holds the #11 overall selection, as well as 14th (33rd overall) and 16th (35th overall) selections in the second round.
The Rapids had previously traded their own natural second round pick to Vancouver in January 2012 for allocation money, however Colorado then obtained second round picks from the Houston Dynamo and LA Galaxy.
In February 2012, Colorado traded forward Mac Kandji to Houston for a conditional pick in the 2014 draft. Kandji played in 34 regular season and playoff games combined for Houston in 2012 before leaving for Greece when his contract ended, thus meeting the conditions which resulted in Houston surrendering their natural second round 2014 pick to Colorado.
In June 2013, Colorado acquired the Galaxy's natural 2014 second round pick in the trade that sent Pablo Mastroeni to LA.
The Rapids also hold the 11th picks in the third (49th overall) and fourth (68th overall) rounds.
