COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Wednesday, January 29, 2014) –Colorado Rapids Academy forward Wilmer Cabrera has been picked for the United States Under-14 National Team for a week-long training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. from Feb. 1-9. Cabrera, of Aurora, is one of 36 players selected by head coach Tony Lepore for the camp, and is one of 23 players who also attended the initial training camp of the cycle in September.
“We are excited for Wilmer to be called into another U-14 camp,” said Brian Crookham, the Rapids’ Senior Director of Youth Development. “His performance in the last camp and his play in the U-14 Development Academy have earned him another opportunity to grow with the best players in the age group.”
Throughout the week, the players will train twice a day in the morning and evening either side of an afternoon break to focus on their academics. The group will play a pair of friendly matches against local club sides on Feb. 5, as well as scrimmage a U.S. Residency Program team on Feb. 8. Cabrera, 13, is a member of the Rapids U-14 Team that plays in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, having joined the Colorado program in 2011.
The Rapids have opened their preseason, and will depart for Houston on Friday, where they will face the Dynamo on February 2 in the team’s first friendly match. Colorado is also set to participate in the Las Vegas ProSoccer Challenge and the Desert Diamond Cup presented by Tucson FC.
