Team of the Week
As you know, MLS releases a Best XI each week. This week, there was a familiar face in the midfield. Dillon Powers recieved Team of the Week honors for his contributions to the Rapids' 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers. It's easy to overlook the type of game Powers had on Saturday but he was the heart and soul of the offense. His passing was critical to the two penalty kicks, which ultimately decided the game.
Pablo Mastroeni was recognized for shaking up the lineup after the team earned a draw at the New York Red Bulls on March 15. Mastroeni moved Deshorn Brown out wide and started Edson Buddle up top. He also added Vicente Sánchez to the starting lineup. Sánchez earned honorable mention after converting one of the Rapids' two penalty kicks for his second goal of the season.
Tifo of the Week
Centennial 38 brought it for home opener. Their creative tifo has been the talk of the internet, and even earned Tifo of the Week honors. Can't say it enough, great work, C38!
C38's home opener tifo featured Rapids legends on the left with the faces of the current key players on the right.
Does anyone know what criteria MLS uses when assembling its weekly power rankings? There has to be some sort of dartboard involved. FC Dallas defeated Chivas USA at home and rocketed up the list to the number one spot. While the Rapids defeat the Portland Timbers at home and inch up to number 11. At least Colorado moved up the rankings this week.
Toronto FC's Head Coach Ryan Nelson believes that his squad's "start is probably the toughest start of any team in the whole of the league." Oh. Really?
He may have had a point if the Rapids hadn't opened against the top three 2013 Supporters' Shield contenders, including the 2013 MLS Cup champions. It doesn't get any easier. After that, the Rapids will travel to Vancouver to face the Whitecaps and then off to Toronto.
Tough start indeed.
