We know what the Colorado Rapids have to do Wednesday night in San Jose in order to secure a playoff berth, but there are also five other teams that could join the New York Red Bulls in the postseason by the weekend.
In one of the tightest playoff races in MLS history, only the New York Red Bulls have secured a spot in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs with only three weeks to play.
The Colorado Rapids could be next, and it could happen as early as Wednesday.
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – At the beginning of the season, Colorado Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja was forced to throw rookies, inexperienced players, and others with limited playing time over the past year into his starting lineup, handcuffed by a seemingly never-ending list of injuries.
Even though the Colorado Rapids are idle this weekend, the team knows they'll hold on to their playoff spot in Western Conference standings come Monday - no matter how any of the nine MLS weekend games go.
With 45 points after 30 games (12-9-9) the Rapids are currently tied with LA for final playoff spot in the West. Vancouver and San Jose are tied for sixth at 41 points each, followed closely by Dallas with 40 points.
The 2013 MLS playoff picture may still be a fuzzy mess considering that all 10 postseason spots are still seemingly up for grabs, but that doesn't mean the current league standings can't offer a preliminary glimpse of the potential matchups we might see once November rolls around.
With ten games remaining in the 2013 MLS regular season, the Colorado Rapids - and just about every other team - are right in the thick of things in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield, which recognizes the team that finishes with the best overall record.
Some fans are still not convinced that this Rapids side has it within them to push for the playoffs, pointing to the fact that they’ve played more games than any of their rivals.
Here’s how things look as of July 29, 2013:
NEW YORK (February 27, 2013) – In 2013, Major League Soccer’s Direct Kick television package will feature additional games for the same price as last year, $79.* This year’s television package will provide fans the opportunity to watch up to 236 MLS regular season matches and select playoff games during the 2013 season. MLS has collaborated with all three providers to offer a FREE PREVIEW from March 2 - 9, for the opening two weekends of the MLS season.
Commerce City, Colo. - The World Cup in Brazil is next year!
Now that we're officially in the year 2013, that's one of the first things I thought about as I looked ahead at what's to come in the soccer world this year.
Here are the five soccer tournaments I'll be paying attention to over the next 12 months:
PORTLAND, Ore. / New York – Adidas and Major League Soccer on Thursday unveiled the updated adidas PRIME, the official match ball for the 2013 MLS season. The adidas PRIME features a new, more aerodynamic construction engineered for increased control and consistent ball movement.
