Without a MLS match since suffering a fifth straight loss to LA Galaxy last Wednesday, the Colorado Rapids were forced to sit back and watch events unfold this weekend as Western Conference rivals played their games in hand.

Vancouver Whitecaps were three points and two places ahead of the Rapids heading into the weekend, with two games in hand. Portland Timbers were one place and one point clear of the Rapids, having played one game less.

Real Salt Lake 0, LA Galaxy 1 (Thurs, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. MT on ESPN 2)

And so we move to Thursday’s action, and two intriguing contests, starting with this little gem just across the way in Utah.

For all their star-spangled, twinkle-toed huffing and puffing the two-times defending champions LA Galaxy managed just the one goal in California at the weekend, but it was a beauty, rifled in by Sean Franklin.

In what was a closely-fought regular season, the Red Bulls clinched the Supporters’ Shield with the fifth lowest points-per-game tally in MLS history.

Their first foray into the 2013 Playoffs continued in the same vein. This one is tense, tight and tantalizingly poised ahead of the second leg inside Red Bull Arena.

And that, everybody is that …

The 2013 season abruptly ended on a drizzly night in Seattle on Wednesday, and left me with the feeling of being asked to leave a party just as it was getting going. We’re now standing out in the street, only able to watch from afar as the rest of the revelers party on.

Vicente Sanchez only arrived in Colorado in the late summer, but his ability and experience quickly made him a central part of the Rapids stretch run to the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Uruguayan's leadership and desire to contribute was never more evident than Wednesday night, when he played the second half against Seattle with a fractured bone in his right shoulder.
