For the second successive Saturday, just one goal proved the Colorado Rapids’ undoing as they ended their bitterly disappointing 2014 season with loss number 18 in a 1-0 reversal at Vancouver Whitecaps.

Without Vicente Sanchez, José Mari, Dillon Powers, Edson Buddle, Marc Burch, Kamani Hill, Jared Watts, Drew Moor or Thomas Piermayr, the Rapids’ first-year head coach Pablo Mastroeni went north with only 17 players (not the 18 permitted), and it was one of the youngest travel parties.

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Colorado Rapids must wait until 2015 to end their winless streak as they bowed out of the 2014 season with a 1-0 defeat at the Vancouver Whitecaps, extending their stretch to 14 without success. The Whitecaps, meanwhile, edged nervously into the playoffs with the win they required.

With the pressure on, the Whitecaps made hard work of their encounter with the already-eliminated Rapids before finally rising to the occasion with a 70th-minute winner from Kendall Waston as Vancouver got a 1-0 win to take them into the postseason.

Carlos Alvarez is a dream for interviewers. He is fluent in both English and Spanish, which is perfect for somebody like me, for whom foreign languages are just that.

Ahead of the final weekend of the regular season, the Vancouver Whitecaps are a side slipping into some kind of form, and one with much still to play for. Carl Robinson’s team currently lie in fifth spot in the Western Conference, one point and one place ahead of the Portland Timbers.

By the time the Rapids’ match at BC Place kicks-off, Vancouver may already be assured of a place in the playoffs, as the Timbers’ contest at FC Dallas will have just about finished.

This weekend marks the end of the 2014 road for the Colorado Rapids, as they wrap-up their Major League Soccer season with a trip to the Vancouver Whitecaps (Altitude, kick-off 8 p.m MT).

As the team seeks to halt the winless slide, the side will look to draw on the two previous meetings with the Whitecaps, both of which have ended in victories for the Rapids.
