MLS Regular Season
Brian Mullan knew it was coming.
The boos showered down early and often from the hostile Sounders crowd and onto the Rapids’ veteran midfielder during Saturday’s 1-0 loss at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
Mullan’s hard tackle on Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani last April broke the Congolese player’s leg and ended Zakuani’s season. That tackle resulted in a record ten-game suspension for Mullan, and a harsh response from Seattle fans on Saturday.
SEATTLE — Zach Scott scored his first career goal, to give the Seattle Sounders a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
The pivotal moment came in the 63rd minute when Scott scored a glancing header off a Alex Caskey corner kick.
The goal ended a scoring drought for the Sounders that had stretched to 306 minutes over the course of four matches. The Sounders defense has helped mitigate any concerns, having now registered two straight shutouts and have now allowed just one non-penalty goal in their five matches.
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – Two of the Colorado Rapids’ biggest lowlights of the 2011 season came against the Seattle Sounders.
The first came on April 22 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, when Brian Mullan put a leg-breaking tackle on Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani, drawing a 10-game suspension and hordes of negative publicity to the 33-year-old veteran. The second came two months later in Seattle on July 16, when star striker Conor Casey ruptured his Achilles and was forced to miss the rest of the season with the injury.
Seattle Sounders FC return home to entertain the Colorado Rapids in a key Western Conference test for both clubs, Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC are coming off their first road trip of the campaign, reaching a scoreless draw at D.C. United. The Rapids are coming off a loss on the road, a 2-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake.
