The draw for the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup has provided an interesing opponent for the Colordo Rapids, whoever emerges from round three.
Colorado Rapids have been drawn at home to either Colorado Springs Switchbacks or Real Monarchs - the USL affliate of Real Salt Lake.
Real Monarchs host the Switchbacks on May 27. The tie with the Rapids will be played on June 16, kickoff 7:00 p.m MT.
Meanwhile, USL affiliate, Charlotte Independence must go to Carolina RailHawks in round three.
No sooner had the Colorado Rapids exited the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night, then attention began turning to the visit of Vancouver Whitecaps this Saturday to Dick's Sporting Goods Park (TICKETS) and the resumption of MLS.
Bizarre is one word used to describe Tuesday's U.S. Open Cup match involving the Colorado Rapids and Atlanta Silverbacks. There were a total of four red cards issued, while both coaches were sent off as the Rapids fell to the Silverbacks 2-1.
Of course, that doesn't even touch upon the nearly hour-long weather delay in the first half of the match. The Colorado sky was as temperamental as the game being played underneath it.
Here are a few spectacular images captured by Rapids fans and staffers.
Before the start of the game:
COMMERCE CITY, Colo.- Insanity ensued as the Atlanta Silverbacks knocked the Colorado Rapids out of the U.S. Open Cup by a 2-1 count on Tuesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. But soccer was far from the story.
This Tuesday's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, involving the Colorado Rapids and Atlanta Silverbacks, will be a first meeting of the two clubs, with the winner guaranteed a home tie in the quarterfinals.
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids could host a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match, should the team beat the Atlanta Silverbacks on Tuesday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. U.S. Soccer announced on Monday that the winner of the Rapids vs. Silverbacks match will host the winner of the Chicago Fire vs. Columbus Crew meeting on Wednesday night in Chicago. The date of a potential quarterfinal match is still to be determined.
Not only did the Rapids romp into round five of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night, but they also welcomed back the talismanic talent that is Vicente Sánchez, who has missed the best part of six weeks due to a sprained knee.
He played the final 26 minutes of Colorado’s 5-2 victory over Orlando City SC. The forward, who has five goals in MLS this season, had an assist on the Rapids’ final goal of the night. For Sánchez, the match was an opportunity to work back to full health, all while the team moved closer to winning a trophy.
A 5-2 win over Orlando City on Tuesday night in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup leads this week's Rapids Podcast, presented by Dick's Sporting Goods. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni talks of his tactics ahead of that game, and of his hopes for the fifth round contest at home against Atlanta Silverbacks, to be staged on June 24 (TICKETS).
