(Tuesday, May 21, 2013) – The Colorado Rapids will visit Orlando City SC of the USL Professional Division (USL Pro) next Tuesday, May 28 in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match, which will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. MT) at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, is the Rapids’ first match in the 2013 Open Cup.
Colorado Rapids U.S. Open Cup results from 1996-2012
In 2012 the U.S. Soccer Federation included all Division I, II, and III professional clubs in the U.S. Open Cup proper for the first time ever. The Division I field included all 16 U.S.-based Major League Soccer teams, which was the first time since 2006 that all Division I teams took part in the nation's oldest soccer tournament.
For the Colorado Rapids, 2012 was the club's first time back in the tournament since 2007. Over the previous four years, the Rapids had failed to advance past the Open Cup Qualifying rounds.
Colorado Rovers fall to Georgia Revolution on penalty kicks in US Open Cup preliminary round
Cinderella will take the form of a team other than the Colorado Rovers in the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Rovers, making their Open Cup debut and representing first-time entry U.S. Specialty Sports Association - the lowest level in the 68 team national tournament - fell to the Georgia Revolution 5-3 on penalty kicks Tuesday night at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch after the teams played to a 1-1 tie through overtime.
