Colorado Rapids are out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after a frustrating night at Houston Dynamo on Tuesday.

This round of 16 game was delayed for almost three hours due to the effects of torrential rain in the afternoon. Once it kicked off at 10.18pm local time, Rapids held their own in the first half but trailed to a header Mauro Manotas just before the interval

However, in the second half, the visitors dominated. They hit the woodwork for a second time and peppered the Houston goal with shots.

Perhaps it is the knockout format, perhaps it is the change of pace but cup competitions can sometimes act as a catalyst for improvements in the league.

Colorado Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni will be hoping that is the case on Tuesday as he takes his side to Houston in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.

The MLS outfit controlled the game throughout. They led 2-0 at the interval thanks to Dominique Badji’s sidefoot finish from an astute pass by captain Sam Cronin. Then Joe Greenspan crowned his debut by heading in Dillon Serna’s free-kick.
