Academy Staff Coach
Dietmar Mertel joined the Colorado Rapids staff in 2015, holding a variety of roles with the Development Academy and PDL teams. His philosophy is straightforward: To observe, to listen, to encourage players to understand their actions and to make good decisions with confidence.
Dietmar's coaching career began in 1987 as a coach in club’s academy teams in Germany, working with U6 – U19 players of all levels of abilities for the next 13 years. As a coach, he won various championships, which he had proudly won as a player before then as well. Since living in the US over the past 19 years, he has coached various boys, girls and women’s teams, US Soccer DA teams, as well as assistant coaching for a team in the W-League. He has coached players that have played and players that are still playing in the UEFA Champions League, the USA Men's National Team, the MLS, the USL and the Mexican Olympic Team.
He has scouted for German, Austrian and Swiss soccer clubs in their respective top divisions and for US Soccer in the Region I. He keeps an active network with his peers and contacts domestically and internationally. He has coached and mentored coaches that are currently coaching in the German Bundesliga and in the UEFA Champions League. He has also planned and executed coach’s educational trips to Europe for the MLS. He holds a US Soccer "B" license.
Dietmar is a native of Germany who now resides in Colorado. Besides spending time with his wife and daughter, in his free time he enjoys summer trips to participate in pre-season camps such as Bayer 04 Leverkusen, SV Werder Bremen, Liverpool FC and others. He has been working along with his mentor Manny Schellscheidt (Region I) for many years. Dietmar calls Manny his biggest influence on the field and off the field.
