Burgundy & Blue Game Gives Fans First Look at 2008 Rapids

COMMERCE CITY CO (March 20 2008) - The Colorado Rapids took the pitch at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last night for the first time in 2008 for the second annual Burgundy & Blue Game. The club’s intrasquad scrimmage which was open to only residents of Commerce City and Rapids season ticket holders saw the sides play to a 1-1 draw.

Throughout the two 30-minute halves both groups had their share of scoring opportunities. The Burgundy team finally broke through in the 20th minute when defender Jordan Harvey weaved his way through from left to right in the box eluding 4 defenders just enough to send a powerful right footed shot into the back of the upper corner of the net. Harvey would later be named the Man of the Match for his impressive strike.
Fans in attendance got to witness new Rapids signees in action as Brazilian Rafael Gomes showed impressive one-on-one moves in the midfield Christian Gomez showed flashes of his dangerous speed and distribution skills Cesar Zambrano impressed with steadfast defensive positioning for his side and rookie Ciaran O'Brien demonstrated his quickness and agility on the ball that made him the club's top draft pick this year.
The Blue squad would find an equalizer in the 41st minute as midfielder Terry Cooke earned an assist on a cross he sent over that Jovan Kirovski finished with a towering header past goalkeeper Justin Hughes.
Rapids Team Captain Pablo Mastroeni made his entrance into the game soon after and immediately the intensity on the field went up a notch. Mastroeni quickly established his presence on the pitch with a crunching tackle on Kosuke Kimura which earned him the only yellow card of the match.

Omar Haner a member of the Rapids U-18 team on trial came in during the 47th minute for Kirovski and immediately found himself with the ball. The youngster sent a cross from the right side of the field that just went over the net.

Midfielder Jacob Peterson had the game’s final chance to break the tie when in the closing seconds his shot sailed just wide of the target.

The Rapids will not have much time to rest as the team boarded a plane this morning headed out of town on their final trip of the preseason. Colorado will spend the next four days in Jackson Mississippi training and preparing for an exhibition match again the Chicago Fire this Saturday March 22 at 2:30 pm MT at M&F Bank Stadium.
