Mathis Goal Clinches Win in Stoppage Time Against Kansas City

DENVER (July 8 2006) – Clint Mathis scored his first goal of the year as the Colorado Rapids defeated the Kansas City Wizards 1-0 in a late game clincher.

The Rapids had the first scoring chance of the game in the sixth minute. Dedi Ben-Dayan played a ball from the left all the way to a streaking Terry Cooke whose header forced Bo Oshoniyi to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Joe Cannon kept the game scoreless as Kansas City came on the counter-attack in the 24th minute. Alex Zotinca broke free on the left and his near post attempt was thwarted by Cannon.

Lance Watson’s shot off a Kansas City corner kick was nearly the first goal of the game. A dangerous ball played into his run was redirected to the crossbar and bounced out of the penalty area.

Colorado had a near goal in the 48th minute as Ben-Dayan headed a ball that Oshoniyi tipped off the crossbar and the ball died a foot away from the goalie’s reach. Kyle Beckerman came in to finish the play but couldn’t get a foot on the ball to give the Rapids the lead.

Beckerman an ever offensive threat lately was unlucky not to have his fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute. His sliding redirection of a Cooke centering pass went off the post.

Mathis broke the deadlock in second half stoppage time with his one touch shot into an open net. Substitute Thiago Martins collected the ball off a pass from Nicolas Hernandez and slotted it through a couple defenders in the box to an on-rushing Mathis who slipped it into the back of the net.

Colorado will be back in action on Friday July 14 when they travel to New York to take on the Red Bulls in a noon Mountain Time kickoff.
