COMMERCE CITY Colo. (Thursday September 24 2009) – The Colorado Rapids announced today that the club will open their 15th Major League Soccer season in 2010 on the road against Chivas USA on Sunday March 28 and will host the Chicago Fire in their home opener at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday April 3.
The Rapids’ complete 2010 schedule will be released at a later date.
This will be the second straight year that the Rapids open a season against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. The match will be broadcast nationally on TeleFutura marking the fifth consecutive year that Colorado play their season opener on national television.
The following weekend the Rapids will return to the friendly confines of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to host the Chicago Fire. Colorado hold a 9-2-3 all-time record in home openers and are a perfect 3-0-0 when playing their first game of the season at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The 2010 MLS Regular Season will see each team play a 30-game regular season followed by playoffs among eight qualifying teams. The 2010 regular season will conclude Oct. 24. The MLS Cup Playoffs will culminate in the championship match MLS Cup 2010 on Nov. 21.
For the first time in its history MLS will not play League games during the group phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The group phase includes the first 48 games of the 64-game tournament that begins on June 11 2010 in South Africa.
The last MLS game prior to the World Cup will be played June 10 and MLS will not schedule any additional League games until after the group phase concludes June 25. MLS does not plan to schedule games on the days of either World Cup Semifinal or the World Cup Final.
Single game tickets for the Rapids’ 2010 Opening Day will not go on sale until early February of next year so the best way fans can assure their spot at the first major event of the Rapids’ next season in Colorado is by securing season tickets.
