Rapids Fall 4-1 to Galaxy on the Road

Carson CA (September 10 2005)- The Colorado Rapids dropped a 4-1 decision to the Los Angeles galaxy tonight at the Home Depot Center in front of an announced attendance of 25874 ending the Rapids' 5-game unbeaten streak.

The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 6th minute when the Rapids' defense was unable to clear a through ball inside their own penalty area. The ball was collected by Hercules Gomez who unleashed a powerful right shot that beat Joe Cannon to his upper right corner from six yards out.

The Black and Blue went down a man in the 21st minute when Nat Borchers saw his second yellow card of the match. Borchers who was the only field player for the Rapids to have started in and played every minute of all of the Black and Blue’s 25 regular season games will miss next weekend’s match against DC United.

The Galaxy added a second goal in the 24th minute when a cross from Cobi Jones was met inside of the Rapids penalty area by an onrushing Landon Donovan. The US National Team forward beat his defender to the ball with a diving header that was strong enough to also beat Cannon to his near post.

Midfielder Kyle Beckerman netted the only goal of the night for the Rapids just a couple of moments after Ned Grabavoy missed an open net opportunity for the home team. Beckerman collected a rebound at the top of the Galaxy’s penalty area in the 48th minute and unleashed a powerful shot that beat Kevin Hartman to his right post. This was Beckerman’s first goal of the 2005 season and his third career strike during his six years in Major League Soccer.

The home team made the score 3-1 in the 66th minute when Grabavoy sent a through ball on a quick breakaway leaving Gomez on a one-on-one situation against Cannon. The Galaxy forward beat Cannon with a swift touch to the right post scoring his personal seventh goal of the season.

A quick turn by rookie Fabrice Nöel in the 81st minute created one of the Rapids’ most dangerous opportunities of the second half. Nöel received a lofted pass from Terry Cooke that forced Hartman off his line inside of the penalty area. The Haitian youth international made a quick turn from his left to his right before unleashing a shot past Hartman but saw his attempt cleared off the goalline by Galaxy defender Tyrone Marshall.

L.A. Galaxy substitute Joseph Ngwenya was brought down by Eric Denton inside of the Rapids penalty area in the 87th minute setting up a penalty kick. Guillermo Ramirez's shot hit the right post of Cannon’s goal but the rebound bounced off the Rapids goalkeeper’s back and into the open net for the Galaxy’s fourth goal of the night.

The Rapids will continue their two game road trip next Saturday September 17th when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on D.C. United at RFK Stadium at 5:30 p.m. (MT) live on Altitude Sports & Entertainment.
