Rapids Tie New England 1-1 Move Into Playoff Position

COMMERCE CITY CO (9/20/08) – The Colorado Rapids battled to a 1-1 draw with the visiting New England Revolution tonight to push the club into playoff position with just five games remaining in the regular season.
Following Saturday night’s MLS action the Rapids find themselves tied for third in the Western Conference with Real Salt Lake with Colorado owning the goal differential tiebreaker over RSL.
After defeating the Revolution 1-0 in April Colorado were unable to secure a season sweep after a hard-fought match at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park but did keep the Revs winless at the stadium.

Colin Clark scored the only goal for Colorado in the 42nd minute when he headed a Terry Cooke cross to the near post and past all-star goalkeeper Matt Reis.
Reis was able to deny the Rapids three times throughout the match with some excellent saves. In the 18th minute he dove to his right to knock away a 20-yard shot from Nick LaBrocca and in the 82nd minute a Medhi Ballouchy shot was deflected toward the back of the net before Reis flew to his right and punched the ball out for a corner.
New England’s equalizer came on their first shot of the game in the 50th minute. A ball bounced right to Kenny Mansally who stuck his left foot out and popped the ball over an onrushing Preston Burpo. The goal snapped a 263 minute shutout streak for Burpo and the Rapids.
After tonight’s game Colorado are 9-0-2 this season when scoring the first goal while New England fell to 0-5-2 when conceding the first goal.
The Rapids hit the road next week for a Saturday night matchup against the New York Red Bulls on September 27 at Giants Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. MT on Altitude.
Colorado will look for the season sweep against the Red Bulls after taking the first contest 4-0 back on July 4 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
